The Byrd Building was built in 1946 as the new location for The Winchester Star daily newspaper and the corporate offices for H. F. Byrd Apples, which at the time was one of the largest apple growers in the United States.
In 1964 H.F. Byrd Apples moved to a new location as the Byrd family newspaper business continued to grow in size and scope.
From 1964-1999 the Byrd family expanded the building on Kent Street five times to reach the current size and for decades the big brick building was simply known as the home of The Winchester Star.
In 2018, after 122 years of Byrd family ownership, the newspaper was sold and The Winchester Star moved out of the building.
Now, after a multi-year mixed use renovation project, The Byrd Building has capacity for up to 6 commercial tenants and 6 residential tenants and is still owned and managed by members of the Byrd family.
The Byrd Building is a 36,000 square foot structure on a two acre parcel in downtown Winchester, Virginia.
The Byrd Building includes office space at 2 N. Kent Street, commercial space at 10 N. Kent Street and 214 E. Boscawen Street and residential space at 210 and 215 E. Boscawen Street. The Byrd Building controls parking lots on the north, south and east sections of the property totaling 105 individual spaces. Each commercial space has access to a wide, covered loading area in the back of the building accessible from Boscawen Street or Philpot Street.
